Milan’s Antonio Donnarumma says December will go down as “the best month of my life” after his exploits in the Coppa Italia against Inter.

Gianluigi’s older brother was thrown into the derby after the teenager and Marco Storari both pulled out just before kick-off, and the late bloomer went from being branded a ‘parasite’ to a hero as Milan went on to beat Inter after extra-time.

“I’ve always trained well, in silence,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Hard work pays. I’m happy because I couldn’t have had a better debut. Parasite? Gigio and I were feeling hurt, but we kept working in silence.

“So many stupid things did the rounds. Gigio never said, ‘I’ll only sign if Antonio comes in.’

“On the contrary, he told me to go and play. We have an extraordinary relationship, we’ve also suffered and only we know how much we have.

“My son will be born and I dedicate this game to my partner. This will be the best month of my life.”
