Mehdi Benatia congratulates Napoli on finishing the year top of Serie A but warns he would rather be there in May.
The Partenopei secured the title of ‘winter champions’ by beating Crotone on Friday evening, with Benetia’s Juventus moving back to within a point of the leaders after a 3-1 win at Verona yesterday.
In what is looking increasingly like a two-horse race for the Scudetto, the 30-year-old insisted he is not interested that the Old Lady still trail Maurizio Sarri's team at the half-way point of the season.
“It was very important to win this match,” the defender said of his side’s win at the Bentegodi.
“After Matuidi’s goal we lost a little bit of rhythm, but then in the second half after Caceres’ goal we recovered.
“Congratulations to Napoli for having finished the first half of the season at the top, but what interests me is being top at the end.”
The Morocco international also commented on the reasons behind his improved individual performances compared to last season.
“Simply more consistency. I am in a good physical shape and I need to play.
“I’m feeling really good, I am lucky to have a top fitness coach and with this confidence I can do even better.”
