Torino President Urbano Cairo says appointing Walter Mazzarri is “a dream come true” as he’s been trying to get him since 2007.
The former Napoli Coach replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic yesterday, and was officially presented this morning.
“Welcome to our new Coach,” Cairo began the Press conference by saying.
“I’m no longer used to doing these Press conferences, because I haven’t sacked a Coach since 2011. Unfortunately we had to make this choice, and it’s never a nice thing.
“Consistency is very important and that applies to everyone, even a football club. In this case we had to make a decision.
“I’m sorry for Mihajlovic, but I’m happy because we’ve finally managed to get a Coach like Mazzarri, who I’ve been thinking of since 2007.
“In that case it was a courtesy visit to Milan but it wasn’t possible to do anything. I’ve done it now and I’m very happy.
“You all know his career well, what’s he’s done as a Coach. Starting at Livorno, then winning three relegation battles at Reggina - one of which was with a hefty points penalty - and then Sampdoria, before the great work done with Napoli.
“The Coach did an extraordinary job there, even finishing in second place. Being able to have a Coach like him is a dream come true.
“What I always liked about Mazzarri, when I saw him from outside, was that he always seemed to me to be a very determined person, with a strong character and a lot of desire.
“Although I didn't know him very well personally, I’ve always followed him and I saw a person with great attention to detail.
“I’ve always seen Mazzarri as a man set on achieving his goals. He had contact with [sporting director Gianluca] Petrachi even before Miha, I’ve always followed him very closely.”
