Joao Mario was lambasted by Inter legend Beppe Bergomi, who called the Portugal international’s performance “embarrassing.”

The midfielder was given a rare start in tonight’s 1-1 draw with Fiorentina, but lost the ball repeatedly and did very little going forward.

His lack of pace was a particular issue and there was a moment just before half-time when he was dispossessed and failed to track back.

Bergomi, who spent his entire career at Inter as a defender, won the 1982 World Cup and is now a commentator for Sky Sport Italia, vented his frustration.

“Joao Mario has been just embarrassing. What I saw just now I never want to see again from any player, let alone one in an Inter shirt.

“He lost the ball and jogged back, he didn’t even try to speed up. All he ever does is pass backwards with no sense of impetus, nor of potential danger.”

Mediaset Premium commentators weren’t much kinder to Joao Mario, as the vote for his performance was “five out of 10 and that’s just for being a nice guy.”
