Lazio director Igli Tare admits Stefan de Vrij is “still undecided” on whether to sign a new contract, but “he will nonetheless end the season here.”
The Dutch international will be out of contract in June and has been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Inter, Juventus, Milan, Manchester United and Manchester City.
“We need patience with De Vrij. The lad is still undecided on his contract renewal, but I hope we can have some clarity as soon as possible,” Tare told Medisaet Premium.
“We have not given him a deadline, because it’s also an issue of the heart, for him and for us. I hope he’ll decide to stay at Lazio.
“It’s true that the rules state from February 1, he can sign for another club. The important thing is that Lazio will go forward, with or without De Vrij, with excellent results. There’s no lack of players in the world, we just need to be smart and find the best ones before they blossom.
“I don’t think this will cause problems in the locker room, as De Vrij is an exemplary professional. We’ve grown as a club also thanks to dealing with situations like this, which are part of football.
“We won’t force the situation, but understand what could be pushing him towards other paths. After the break we are bringing in an experienced player like Martin Caceres from Verona.
“We have no intention of selling De Vrij in January. He is an important player, we can achieve great results with him. If he doesn’t sign a new contract, he will nonetheless end the season at Lazio.”
