The head of the Italian referees’ association, Marcello Nicchi, defends VAR – “out of 900 incidents, five mistakes have been made”.

Serie A adopted Video Assistant Referees for this season, and while there have been cases of decisions being correctly changed, it hasn’t ended controversy surrounding officials.

“Out of 900 incidents, five mistakes have been made,” Nicchi insisted, speaking on Radio Crc.

“It’s better than forecast. The VAR mades the referee clear, he knows that if he makes an error there’s someone to correct him. We’re still in an experimental phase.

“I don’t want to talk about a single referee, what happens on the pitch remains central and that’s how it’ll stay. We have to keep working.

“We’ll open a VAR room at Coverciano, which will also be used by foreign delegations who come to Italy to learn.

“We have to encourage this instrument.”
