Napoli are ready to renegotiate the Dries Mertens contract to increase or even remove the €28m release clause.
The deal was only signed in May 2017 and included a clause that raised quite a few eyebrows even at the time.
According to Sky Sport Italia, the Partenopei are worried he will be tempted away over the summer and are eager to discuss a different contract.
Mertens has said he’s open to increasing the release clause, but only in exchange for a higher salary.
The Belgium international currently earns €4m plus €1m in bonuses per season and is aiming for €6m.
He has scored 14 goals with 12 assists in 30 competitive games for Napoli this season.
Mertens has been linked above all with Manchester United and Liverpool.
