Roberto Donadoni was bitterly critical of the referee after Bologna’s 3-1 defeat to Napoli. “It’s a penalty that’s given for top eight teams.”

Rodrigo Palacio had opened the scoring within 25 seconds at the Stadio San Paolo, but Dries Mertens converted a very soft penalty for Adam Masina’s small tug on the back of Jose Callejon’s collar.

In the same half, Bologna protested at a possible Kalidou Koulibaly handling offence.

“When you play that well and work that hard, obviously this kind of result is very disappointing,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The referee decided it was better not to waste time with VAR and therefore relied only on his own judgement… I asked the referee for some clarification on the penalty and he said he couldn’t judge the intensity of the contact. It’s a contact sport, so the intensity of the contact is crucial and that is what a referee is there to evaluate. I felt like I was on some alien planet all of a sudden.

“Unfortunately, you end up thinking a penalty like that is given if the team is from the eighth place up, not given if you’re in the other 12 teams.

“The Koulibaly handball is another one that can be given or not, depending on the circumstances. I thought that shot was going in if it hadn’t struck his hand.”
