Both sides ultimately had reason to complain in the 1-1 result, because Crotone were awarded a soft penalty and Fabio Pisacane received a straight red card for a high tackle.

The worst setback was in the final minutes, as Crotone had the ball in the net with Federico Ceccherini’s header, only for it to be disallowed using VAR for offside – but the footage shows no offside position.

“Perhaps the VAR monitor was bent… Perhaps the referee got confused as to who was defending and who was attacking… I have to laugh, because if anyone was ‘offside’ it was the team with the white jerseys, except they were the ones defending!” an incredulous Zenga told Sky Sport Italia.

“To be honest, a professional at this level cannot make this sort of mistake. It’s not possible. Once again, we lose two points to a strange incident in the final minutes.

“I’ll say this. We played well, did enough to win the game – and technically had won the game – so if we keep playing like this, we will win back the points that we’ve lost so far.

“What I take from this match is that my team worked hard and played very good football.”
