Younes was determined to arrive before he becomes a free agent at the end of the season and underwent a medical last week after Ajax agreed a €5m fee.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, the Germany international has returned home for personal reasons and won’t make the move until June because Ajax suddenly raised their asking price.

At this point, it looks as if Younes will join Napoli as a free agent next term.

Negotiations continue with Sassuolo for Politano, who has made it clear he is desperate to make the move to the Stadio San Paolo, but his agent is pessimistic.

“We’re working and until the transfer deadline, we will continue working,” Davide Lippi told Sky Sport Italia after leaving a meeting with Sassuolo.

“Hope is the last thing to go.”
