Inter defender Danilo D’Ambrosio explains why he turned down a move to Chelsea. “You must chase dreams and not money.”

The 29-year-old is prized for his versatility, able to play at right-back, left-back or in central defence.

“I use social media because it’s important to keep the fans informed and they feel closer to you,” he told Inter TV.

“I’ve always said that if the fans don’t come to the stadium, it’s the fault of us players. Fans must always be thanked for supporting you even through difficult times.

“I always agree with the motto ‘hard work pays off.’ I maintain daily work helps you to achieve your targets. Tenacity is something you cannot do without.

“I don’t think I am the best Italian full-back, but I do believe I’m one of the best.”

D’Ambrosio’s career nearly took a very different turn when he rejected an offer from Chelsea.

“I was still too young, as I as only 17 years old. I had a trial and they were ready to give me a five-year contract, but I would’ve had to move my mother or father. They were working, I didn’t want to split the family up.

“Chelsea offered me a lot more money, but you must chase dreams and not money. We went to sign a contract with Fiorentina instead.”

The language might also have been an issue in London.

“I learned Perfect by Ed Sheeran, because my baby son falls asleep when that song is playing and he’s in my arms. I don’t speak English very well, but I’ve pledged to learn that for him.”
