“I don’t see this as a play-off for European contention, as the most decisive games are played near the end of the season,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“The European objective I hear being talked about is a futile exercise without hard work. It’s just waving a target in front of someone to make them happy. I am more focused on substance and we must play with intensity and courage. The rest is just journalistic fluff.

“If you consider the result more important than the performance, then you’ll never win with style. So far the team has done extraordinary things this season, but getting a few games wrong is only human. The principles remain strong.”

The Blucerchiati had a fairly quiet January transfer session and that suits Giampaolo just fine.

“My wish was that nobody left and that proved to be the case, except for (second choice goalkeeper Christian) Puggioni. He contributed to setting out the path and was an extraordinary professional with us, always ready when called upon.

“The fact that nobody left the club because of economic reasons is certainly positive.”

Dennis Praet is the only absentee tomorrow with a thigh strain, as Fabio Quagliarella and Ivan Strinic have recovered.
