The Giallorossi ended their seven-game negative streak with a 1-0 win away to Hellas Verona thanks to Cengiz Under’s strike in the opening 43 seconds.

“I celebrated so much at the final whistle because we hadn’t won in a long time,” defender Manolas told the club’s Match Program.

“We were feeling a lot of pressure in the locker room and the stadium. Also within me… I am not accustomed to not winning. Fortunately we held out, because in the second half with 30 minutes down to 10 men, we struggled.

“We didn’t get the results, but for the previous three matches against Sampdoria and Inter, we hadn’t played badly. I think beating Benevento on Sunday will help us get back on track like the start of the season and bring Roma back to where we belong.

“It’s normal when the results don’t come, the confidence is hit. We must improve in every area, so we’ll try to keep up the strong defensive record and also try to score more goals. I am sure things will get better over the next few games.

“I always give 150 per cent on the field to help the team towards victory. We do have to improve in our mentality. It can’t be that two defeats are enough to lose all our confidence. The quality of this squad deserves to be higher up the table.”

Roma host bottom of the table Benevento at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

“Since they brought in Coach Roberto De Zerbi, it’s a different team. They always try to play the ball, press high and show some good football. Last week they lost to Napoli, but caused the leaders big problems in the first half.

“It won’t be an easy game and we mustn’t underestimate them because they’re in last place. We have to be fully concentrated, as you’ll see it’ll be difficult.

“The fans are so important to us, but it’s only fair when the results don’t come that they start to grumble. They are accustomed to seeing Roma higher up the standings. We’ll try to pick up the three points and play beautiful football to give the fans what they deserve.”
