Marcello Lippi believes Inter’s lack of ‘extraordinary’ players is catching up with them.

Inter were unbeaten for the first four months of the season, until a 3-1 defeat to Udinese spawned a run of eight games without a win to leave them at risk of falling out of Champions League contention.

“I understand the fans’ unhappiness: even this season, after a great start, has been extinguished, deflated,” their former Coach told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Spalletti had created good psychological assumptions, but let’s be honest: barring Icardi, who puts away 90 percent of their balls, they have good players but not extraordinary ones.

“Regarding Spalletti’s comments to the fans, it seems nothing new to me.”

Lippi also commented on Inter’s rivals for a top-four finish, capital rivals Roma and Lazio.

“They’re doing well,” continued the China boss.

“I’ve followed him since he was at Sassuolo, who played like a big team in Europe, with a 4-3-3, aggression, pressing, their strikers working with and without the ball.

“They struggled to juggle the League and Europe, but it was still spectacular to see and he’s showing the same mentality at Roma.

“Inzaghi’s been a surprise for how he manages his team tactically and in terms of organisation, as well as rotations and situations, but I wouldn’t forget the others.”
