“The important thing is to follow on from what we did at Verona and continue on the right track,” the director of sport told Mediaset Premium.

“January was not a good month for us, February has to be better, because we’ve got important matches in Serie A and the Champions League.

“I think we are ready for this rush of tough fixtures, because the team is rediscovering its level and this will be a good finale to the season.

“The problems were more psychological and of performance than they were physical. It’s good that we are recovering players from injury, such as Daniele De Rossi, Patrik Schick and Jonathan Silva, who will be ready soon.”

Napoli and Juventus have surged away from the rest, leaving Inter, Roma and Lazio to fight for third and fourth.

“I didn’t expect such a big gap, no. We made mistakes in the first couple of months and they did not. The table speaks the truth, if you want to be higher up the standings, you can’t make as many mistakes as we did.

“I believe Inter, Roma and Lazio have more or less the same chance. Lazio are having a great campaign, Inter like us are having some ups and downs, but a strong Coach. We’re all in the running.”

Roma are above all happy that the January transfer window is over, having held on to Edin Dzeko and Radja Nainggolan.

“It was a difficult period, there were some complicated decisions to be made. We did what Roma deserved on the market and have the right squad to achieve our objectives.”
