It’s reported Gianluigi Buffon will be called-up for Italy’s two March friendlies, and he could play on beyond this season.
The goalkeeper appeared to have played his final games for the Azzurri in the play-offs with Sweden which saw the national team fail to qualify for the World Cup.
Buffon had previously stated that his intention is to retire after this season, but in recent weeks it appears he’s considering changing his mind.
Now Sky Italia is reporting that he will be called-up by Luigi Di Biagio for the two friendlies against England and Argentina.
While that had previously been reported, it was expected these games would serve as a farewell but it now appears that may not be the case.
Buffon has never won the European Championships, and he hasn’t ruled-out staying on until Euro 2022, at which point he’ll be 42.
The legendary goalkeeper won’t continue if he doesn’t feel he’s at a good enough level, but it appears increasingly unlikely he’ll retire after this season.
