Gonzalo Higuain’s brace had put the Bianconeri in front in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, but Kane got round Gigi Buffon, then in the second half Christian Eriksen’s free kick made the most of a poor defensive wall.

“We could’ve folded when 2-0 down away from home at this stage of the Champions League, big stage, but it just shows the character of the squad,” the striker told BT Sport.

“It was an excellent performance after that, we deserved to get back into the game. When you look at it, two away goals, a draw to take back to Wembley, it’s a great result.

“I had a chance just before the goal with a header, obviously I should’ve scored that, but I waited for the next one. Dele Alli put a great ball in and I managed to finish it off.

“It put us back in the game and that was important.”

The second leg is at Wembley on March 7.
