Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam will be back in action “in mid-April,” confirmed his surgeon after a fractured kneecap.
The unlucky Algeria international was just about ready for his comeback after a torn anterior cruciate ligament when he suffered this new injury to the same knee in training.
“This was absolutely not caused by a rushed return to training, because the two injuries are completely different,” Professor Pier Paolo Mariani told Le Buteur.
“When Ghoulam had surgery on his knee ligament three-and-a-half months ago, he did not have any lesions to the kneecap. I decided to intervene surgically again when the Napoli medics informed me of the fracture.
“A cruciate ligament has nothing to do with the kneecap, even if it is the same knee. I have operated on players in the past for similar injuries and they were back on the field in under three months without a secondary injury. It’s just a fluke.
“There are no risks to his career. Now he’ll have to wait another month-and-a-half, but we’ll certainly see the same Ghoulam we knew before, both physically and technically.
“He’ll be back on the field in mid-April.”
