Ausilio: 'Spalletti defending Inter players'

Piero Ausilio insists Luciano Spalletti was defending Inter players rather than criticising the club ahead of tonight’s trip to Genoa.

It kicks off at 19.45 GMT, click here for the line-ups and Liveblog.

In yesterday’s Press conference, the Coach made some surprising comments, calling on fans to celebrate the players they have rather than those who might virtually arrive in future.

“I think Spalletti was trying to reaffirm the quality of the squad at his disposal,” Ausilio told Mediaset Premium.

“We are in the Champions League zone and must do even better until the end of the season. The Coach wanted to send a signal that the players we have are important.”

Mauro Icardi misses his third game in a row due to muscular issues, while Ivan Perisic and Joao Miranda are also out.

“I think next week Icardi will be back. He is always generous and ready to push through the pain barrier, but we didn’t want to risk a relapse.

“I have already said there are no problems for a contract renewal. He already has a long contract and we have not received any indications from his entourage. When the time comes, we’ll do what we need to do.

“Eder was already offered a contract extension when he wasn’t playing much, as he has always given everything and deserved recognition. He was never on the transfer market.

“Antonio Candreva has worked very hard for the team, but it is odd he hasn’t scored yet this season. Yann Karamoh is just starting out, Matias Vecino can get goals, so we do have the resources.

“Spalletti focused on getting the team balanced and relying on a solid defence first. We’re happy if we always win 1-0.”
