It was an incident-packed game with a saved penalty and VAR decisions, but ultimately decided by a Jack Bonaventura strike as Milan beat Sampdoria to go joint sixth.
The Rossoneri had a great chance to take an early lead when Nicola Murru blocked a Davide Calabria cross with his arm, but Ricardo Rodriguez saw his spot-kick parried by specialist Emiliano Viviano.
Another Calabria cross did get through and this time Bonaventura steered it in, volleying off the inside of his boot.
Samp also had penalty appeals waved away, as VAR confirmed Calabria’s handball was millimetres outside the area.
VAR was called into action again as Leonardo Bonucci’s goal was ruled offside, while in the second half Hakan Calhanoglu rattled the bar and Gianluca Caprari missed a golden opportunity to equalise in stoppages.
