The Giallorossi had the better of the first half and went in front through Cengiz Under, but Facundo Ferreyra pounced on a defensive error and Fred turned a free kick in off the underside of the bar.

Bruno Peres also cleared Ferreyra’s effort off the line in stoppages and the second leg of this Champions League Round of 16 will be played in Rome on March 13.

“We had started very well and we created the first scoring opportunity, even if there was nobody there to finish it off,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“At half-time, I gave indications to my team on how to attack Roma and I’m happy with the way they applied my suggestions.

“We were in good shape physically, which I can assure you is not simple after such a long winter break. We could’ve won with a bigger margin and Roma must thank Alisson, as their goalkeeper performed some extraordinary saves.”

Shakhtar have won all their home games in the Champions League this season and also beat Napoli 2-1 here in the group phase.

“I think it’s a coincidence. It’s very difficult to play against Italian sides, especially if you go behind, as they are well-organised defensively.”

Shakhtar lost defender Serhiy Kryvstov to a badly sprained ankle in the first half.

“After initial examination, I can say he’ll be out for quite a few weeks.”
