Papu Gomez expressed Atalanta “sadness, because we were so close” to eliminating Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League Round of 32.
They had been leading 2-1 in Dortmund and were beaten 3-2 by late goals. They were again in front tonight only to concede at the 83rd minute and go out 4-3 on aggregate.
“There’s bitterness, sadness, because we really cared about continuing in the Europa League. We came very close and were so unlucky in the draws to come up against very strong sides, but played really well and were so close,” Papu told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-1 draw.
“This is football, sometimes the ball goes in, sometimes it doesn’t, but we still put in two great performances against one of the best clubs in Europe.”
Their home games were all played at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia, the Sassuolo arena, because the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo doesn’t meet UEFA standards.
“We leave the tournament with heads held high. I compliment and thank all the fans, who after a day of work travel two hours by train or bus to come and see us.
“Now we’ll try to get into the Europa League again for next season.”
