Matteo Politano’s agent warns there’s no guarantee he’ll join Napoli next season, but Juventus did show interest in the Sassuolo winger.
The negotiations were concluded in the final hour of the January transfer window, but the contracts weren’t signed in time.
“He was very, very close to joining Napoli. It was a photo finish moment,” agent Davide Lippi told Tuttosport.
“Napoli strongly wanted the player and were ready to invest. It was a January of high emotion for Politano and for us.
“In the end, the deal was not closed and the player remained at Sassuolo. Matteo is a professional and is giving the utmost effort to ensure Sassuolo’s safety.
“Contracts are to be respected. Of course, for a player like him, it is only normal to think of making a step up in future. Right now he has Sassuolo in his mind, then we’ll see what happens over the summer.”
There had been reports that Juventus intercepted to make an offer for Politano, creating a bidding war, so Napoli face competition next term too.
“There was interest from Juventus, but I didn’t have direct contact with the Bianconeri. I had got into details with the Napoli directors.
“Napoli are a huge club who are aiming for the top and Politano already proved he wanted to join them. The real question is will Napoli still want to fill that role or not next season?
“He’ll also have to prove over the next few months that he is up to the task, whether for Napoli or any other club. There are moments in the career of an athlete when it’s time to change and it’s up to the club to understand the perfect moment to sell and make everyone happy.”
