Igli Tare has revealed how Lazio signed Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and his biggest mistake but does not believe Stefan de Vrij was influenced by agents.

Lazio stand to make a significant profit on Milinkovic-Savic, with the likes of Juventus, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain interested, but will lose De Vrij for nothing and – as Tare admitted – missed out on a young Javier Pastore.

“Milinkovic was at Vojvodina. I followed him thanks to a friend,” the sporting director told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He was as tall as me and had the technical ability of a star, but I couldn’t guarantee him the games he needed.

“I monitored him at Genk for several months and then went for him. Fiorentina had contacted his father, and it was out of respect for him that Sergej went to Florence that day.

“After that, he showed me respect and the relationship created with his agents.

“Have I ever been suspicious of De Vrij’s agents? No, they have nothing to do with [him leaving].

“In my career, I made the classic misstep from apprenticeship, missing out on Pastore.

“[His agent] Simonian gave me his DVD, I said ‘he’s a top player,’ but two agents made me believe that he didn’t have anything to do with the lad.

“Since then, I’ve become wary of certain agents.”
