Roberto Donadoni felt Bologna put in “a positive performance after the worst possible start” against SPAL, but explained that amazing miss.
The match was decided by an Alberto Grassi strike at the dawn of the second half, but Bologna were down to 10 men for practically the entire game, as Giancarlo Gonzalez saw red for a last-man foul on Mirco Antenucci.
“We had the worst possible start, but perhaps the first error was mine, as I started Andrea Poli when he wasn’t fully fit. It was wrong to gamble on that,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-0 defeat.
“We paid a heavy price with that red card, which looking back did not seem to me worthy of a dismissal. The team reacted well and we fought back in every move.”
Mattia Destro really should’ve equalised with the last kick of the game, but somehow turned over the bar from a couple of yards out.
“After the restart, we allowed them only one shot on target and it’s a pity about the incredible chance we missed at the end. The result was negative, but in the circumstances, the performance was positive.
“We were in front of their goal in three or four occasions, including that last one. Mattia hit it with his heel, otherwise it couldn’t possibly have gone that high when he was a metre from the goal line. It’s inexplicable, otherwise.”
