Sanchez 'distraught' at Astori death

Former Fiorentina defender Carlos Sanchez is “distraught” after being told of Davide Astori’s sudden death, but will fly to Florence.

The 31-year-old captain died in his sleep last night and was found this morning in the team hotel when he failed to turn up for breakfast.

The Viola were in Udine ahead of today’s planned Serie A match against Udinese.

Sanchez is currently on loan with Espanyol and was told the news on the touchline following the game with Levante, crumpling to the ground in shock.

“Carlos is distraught. We tried to make him feel better, but it’s very difficult,” said Espanyol captain Victor Sanchez.

“We can do nothing other than offer our condolences.”

It’s reported Carlos Sanchez will fly to Florence to be with his former teammates and has been given permission by his club to make the journey.
