Fiorentina asked to participate in Davide Astori’s autopsy, though not to protect themselves, but their request was turned down by the prosecutor.
The Viola captain was tragically found dead on Sunday morning, and his autopsy will be held today, with police looking to definitively rule out any foul play.
This is standard procedure in Italy, and there is no suggestion that Astori’s death was anything more than a tragic twist of fate.
The club had asked to be represented at the autopsy, but that was turned down by the prosecutor.
“We didn’t ask out of a desire to protect Fiorentina,” lawyer Raffaele Conte confirmed to ANSA.
“We did it because we wanted to participate to ascertain what the causes of death were. We thought we could do it as a person affected or damaged by the crime.
“The prosecutor decided that any offence is only against immediate family.”
Astori’s funeral will be held on Thursday.
