Lazio President Claudio Lotito has lost his bid for election to the Senate by a handful of votes, but could ask for a recount.

The patron had been running for Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party in the Benevento constituency.

He had initially been named as the winner based on exit polls, but as the count continued, it got closer and closer.

Eventually, Lotito lost by a handful of votes and there could be a recount.

“I advised my friend Lotito to appeal,” said Mayor of Benevento Clemente Mastella to the media.

“There are at least seven ballots that were spoiled because the cross was not in the centre of the symbol or name. The reading of the ballots was far too pernickety.”

Ex-Milan CEO Adriano Galliani did win his election for a Senate seat, again with Forza Italia.
