Ciro Immobile and Felipe Anderson turned it around in a thrilling second half, but Junior Moraes curled a spectacular long-range strike into the far top corner.

Immobile had the chance to win it with the last kick of the game, but his lob bounced off the upright of an open goal.

“We can only hope that upright won’t prove to be a regret, as 3-2 would’ve made it a different prospect in the second leg. We have to win in order to progress in the Europa League,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Dynamo Kiev proved to be the team we expected. We certainly should not have conceded the first goal, as we should’ve defended better on the cross to the back post.

“We turned it around, wasted chances and then conceded a world-class goal, though one again we should’ve closed up better on Junior Moraes and not give him time to take the shot.

“Towards the end of the game, I pushed Milinkovic-Savic to a more advanced role and we were very close to scoring the third goal with his flick to send Immobile through.”

Lazio have been stuttering of late, as they lost a penalty shoot-out to Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final, then in Serie A in stoppages to Juventus.

“We kept a clean sheet against Sassuolo and Milan, then conceded that great goal from Paulo Dybala at the 93rd minute. We had defended well as a team lately and allowed Dynamo Kiev nothing in the first half, but there were errors on both goals tonight.

“At this level, you have to close down the strikers and not give them the time or space to punish us.

“Scoring goals has never been a problem for us, even if you can lose balance with so many attacking players, but they sacrifice themselves for the team. We deserved better tonight.”

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is undoubtedly talented, but seems a little too inconsistent and tries to over-complicate matters.

“Sergej is a very generous player who works hard. Some of his final choices were wrong tonight, we’ll look over the game tomorrow, but we know that what we’re doing isn’t enough, we have to do more, starting from Sunday against Cagliari.”
