Some decisions were forced upon Coach Eusebio Di Francesco, as Edin Dzeko and Federico Fazio were suspended, with Gregoire Defrel and Rick Karsdorp injured, so Patrik Schick got a chance to shine.

Toro were in crisis after back-to-back defeats against Juventus and Verona, missing Adem Ljajic, Lyanco, Joel Obi, Cristian Molinaro, Kevin Bonifazi and suspended Nicolas Burdisso.

Toro won here 2-1 in December to knock Roma out of the Coppa Italia, but that was when Sinisa Mihajlovic was still in charge.

Roma dominated possession in the early stages but without ever really testing Salvatore Sirigu, and Toro were able to draw confidence from that.

Indeed, Iago Falque’s curler against his former club was expertly tipped around the post by Alisson, before Andrea Belotti knocked a corner wide from a yard out, leaving the striker on just five goals in 21 appearances in 2017-18.

The goalkeeper then needed to push away Afriyie Acquah’s low drive, and from that the Lupi turned a corner as Manolas headed home Alessandro Florenzi’s pinpoint delivery.

The Greek looked to the skies in memory of former teammate Davide Astori, whose legacy was honoured before kick-off, but De Rossi chose to remain silent after he slotted home from a free kick.

Roma never looked like throwing away their lead after that, yet Pellegrini nonetheless scored a third deep in stoppage time, coolly finishing off a quick-fire breakaway.
