Walter Mazzarri explained his unusual choices in the 3-0 defeat to Roma, but Torino were “intimidated” after conceding the opener.

The Granata had the better of the first half and were only denied an opener by Alisson Becker, but lost their way after the break and eventually lost 3-0.

“We did so much in the first half, the goalkeeper did what you all saw and is an extraordinary player,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“It’s disappointing that we conceded a goal on a set play, but a single incident cannot affect an entire match. We should’ve reacted to that setback.

“If you don’t score four clear opportunities, it can well happen that you then concede. After that, we got intimidated and Roma were galvanised.”

The game was also transformed when Mazzarri took off Iago Falque, a decision that bemused many watching.

“We were lacking determination. Iago had several chances and did well, but I took him off because in the second half he was doing double the work on Aleksandar Kolarov.

“Before the break, Roma didn’t manage a single move down that flank thanks to the sacrifice of Iago and Alex Berenguer, but as time wore on, Iago seemed tired.”

Andrea Belotti had perhaps the best chance, but fired over the bar.

“He worked hard for the team, but there are moments when strikers score at every touch of the ball. He’s had a difficult year, we have to wait for him to find his confidence, but he really did help the side today.”

Mazzarri had gone unbeaten in five after replacing Sinisa Mihajlovic, but this was Torino’s third consecutive defeat.

“We had some good results early on and the only game we really got wrong was against Verona, which we admitted. We’re eager to fight back, but Roma are Roma and at this moment a defeat at the Olimpico is understandable.”
