Having already won the first leg 2-0, Arsenal eventually emerged with a result 3-1 in London too.

“Nobody can say we didn’t try or believe. Unfortunately, after the 2-1 goal, we lost our way,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were on level terms with Arsenal and if we had taken even some of the chances we had before taking the lead, it could’ve been a different game.

“We saw the team grow and improve, nobody can say we didn’t try. Arsenal are a good side and unfortunately the regrets are all in the first leg.

“The penalty incident weighs on the balance of the game, but mistakes can happen. It’s a pity, as we had put the tie back on track with Hakan’s goal and going into half-time 1-0 up would’ve been a huge boost.

“The great thing is the thousands of fans who travelled here and applauded us at the final whistle. They’ll be with us at San Siro on Sunday, and us with them, as we continue this race for fourth.”
