Undone by a Danny Welbeck dive and Gianluigi Donnarumma howler, Milan also have to take responsibility in our Football Italia player ratings.

Gianluigi Donnarumma – 5

Made several good saves at the start, but the night went downhill for him after the penalty. Had no luck when Granit Xhaka’s shot somehow spun off his gloves and into the net or with Danny Welbeck’s close-range header that made it 3-1 on the night.

Fabio Borini – 5.5

Asked to play in an unfamiliar right-back role and unsurprisingly had his hands full on the defensive side of things, but made a good old go of it. Looked more out of place going forward than when defending and that is a resounding thing to say about a striker.

Leonardo Bonucci – 6

After having no joy in the first leg when playing the ball out from the back, the responsibility was handed over to his younger partner to build the play in this game. Made one surging charge up the pitch and played the pass of the game but Nikola Kalinic just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Alessio Romagnoli – 6.5

Most of Milan’s attacks were started off by the left foot of Romagnoli and a lot of Arsenal’s attacks were stopped by his right foot, head and body.

Ricardo Rodriguez – 5

Scandalous decision by the ref to call a penalty on him when Welbeck took a Swan Dive inside the box. That call changed the game and put the Gunners in the driving seat.

Franck Kessie – 7

Once again was left with everything to do on his own in midfield. Suso never gave him the chance to link up with him, the Spaniard was too selfish on the ball. The Ivory Coast international bossed the midfield for Milan for a period before Arsenal’s second goal.

Riccardo Montolivo – 5

Replaced Lucas Biglia in the line-up from the first leg and was much better defensively than the Argentine was last week. Struggled when playing the ball forward when under pressure, though.

Andre Silva – 5

Came in to partner Cutrone upfront and had a great opportunity to score within the first minute of the game. Tried the best he could to make something happen, but Milan lacked any real creativity in the forward positions and all he and Cutrone could do was chase the ball.

Suso – 5

Never found a teammate with any passes or any of his crosses. Booked for a dive when he could have taken a shot. Frustrating and fruitless night.

Patrick Cutrone – 5.5

Lacked any real service. Tried to get on the end of things, but had no luck.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 7

Smacked in a beautiful right-footed shot from around 25 yards out that dipped and swerved into the bottom corner.

Substitutes:

Nikola Kalinic – 5

Replaced Cutrone for the last 25 minutes and had a great chance to score seconds after coming on, but his timid header went straight into the hands of David Ospina.

Giacomo Bonaventura – 5

Came on for Calhanoglu when Milan were on top and pushing for a goal, but his side fell behind straight away, and the tie was over.

Manuel Locatelli – N/A

Got 10 minutes at the end when Gennaro Gattuso gave Kessie a break.
