Inter were top of Serie A by early December, until a dramatic loss of form not only saw them fall out of the title race but also face a fight to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“We entered a bad run, during which we weren’t able to express our qualities,” the midfielder told Tuttosport.

“We honestly don’t know what happened to us, otherwise we’d have found a solution.

“Luckily we’re getting out of it, as shown by the game against Napoli, during which we played as a team and were more compact.

“Crisis? No because since the start of the season, everyone at the club said the objective was the Champions League, and the fact that we haven’t dropped points against the big teams confirms this team have the potential and quality to stay in the top four.

“For us to improve, however, our attitude must be the same against the big teams and lesser ones.

“Spalletti? He has great charisma, is very forward-thinking in his football and has an attitude, which we haven’t been able to show with consistency in all our matches.

“In addition, he’s brought over his experience, which he’s helping many of us with. Spalletti’s certainly helped us, but it ultimately comes from us because we know how important this season is.

“We know that we mustn’t give up so we don’t lose sight of our objective. After what happened last season, we feel we’re at a crossroads:

“This season is crucial because we can’t afford to make those mistakes again. What happened last season mustn’t happen again.

“My flaws? Sometimes I should release the ball quicker. Spalletti’s also mentioned it to me.”
