There had been fears that Inter were pursuing De Vrij to replace Skriniar, but the Slovakian did his bit to allay them, while opining his fellow defender would ‘certainly help’ the Nerazzurri.

“It’s always like this when you face your old team,” he told Premium Sport, referring to the Beneamata’s match against Sampdoria on Sunday.

“You know that they’re very strong at home, so we must go to Genoa to win. Spalletti’s comments? It was a tough game against Napoli, they’re very strong and it was complicated to take the ball off them, but we did well at times, even if it’s true that we must give more.

“Maybe the Coach wanted to motivate us so we’d give 110 percent and be focused for the entire 90 minutes.

“Now we have to give absolutely everything, we must always be on top form, even away from home, where we haven’t won for a while: we need to win because the Champions League is our objective.

“De Vrij? He’s a good player, someone with quality, and he’ll certainly help us. The fans afraid that I’ll leave? They can be calm, I’m happy here.”
