The striker had been considered a strong candidate to start the game, as he was on the bench for Thursday’s Europa League defeat to Arsenal.

Kalinic’s name did not appear in the squad list released by Gennaro Gattuso this afternoon and it was initially assumed he was injured.

However, news agency Ansa revealed Milan had left him out due to a ‘technical decision’ by Gattuso, but the club refused to elaborate beyond that.

It’s not clear what happened to prompt this exclusion, but more details are expected to emerge over the next couple of days.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, there was no row as such, but Kalinic had the wrong attitude in training and didn't give it his all.

Milan are already missing injured Alessio Romagnoli, Davide Calabria and Ignazio Abate.

Kalinic has scored only four goals in 30 competitive games for Milan and one of them was against Chievo on October 25.

His most recent strike came against Benevento on December 3.
