Former Inter man Gary Medel insists Frank de Boer was not a ‘flop’ and reveals Luciano Spalletti wanted him to play as a No 10.

Medel dedicated the second part of his interview with Gazzetta dello Sport to the Coaches he played under at Inter and why he fell out of favour.

“De Boer and Pioli? The Dutchman wasn’t a flop but rather an excellent Coach, who didn’t have time to put his ideas across,” explained the Besiktas midfielder.

“De Boer and Pioli? The Dutchman wasn’t a flop but rather an excellent Coach, who didn’t have time to put his ideas across,” explained the Besiktas midfielder.

“Pioli, on the other hand, did well and should be remembered as a super person and an important coach.

“Mazzarri? I’ll always be bound to him. He was often criticised, but he’s one of the best around.

“Did I leave because of Spalletti? No, absolutely [not]. He’s a great Coach and he was very clear to me.

“He said, ‘I want good dribblers in defence and midfield. I can’t make promises to an ‘incontrista’ like you so make your assessments.’

“I’m nostalgic, but with the World Cup on the horizon, unfortunately things became blurry and I couldn’t afford to stay.

“He proposed the role of ‘trequartista’ [No 10] to me, but adapting to it would’ve been very difficult.”
