Torino Coach Walter Mazzarri recalls Emiliano Mondonico, the last man to win a trophy with the club – “he was a complete gentleman”.

The former Granata boss lost his battle with cancer this week, so it’s sure to be an emotional occasion when they face Cagliari tomorrow afternoon.

“I remember him as a complete gentleman, he was a man of value,” Mazzarri recalled in his pre-match Press conference.

“I only met him later, when he was a pundit, but even the way he greeted you let his gentlemanliness shine through – even when he had to criticise you.

“It’s a sad moment, he was a great Coach in Torino’s history, the last trophy was won with him. I’m very sorry.”

Mazzarri also spoke about tomorrow’s game, and he’s not expecting an easy time for his team in Sardinia.

“We need to be prepared, because don’t forget they were winning against Lazio [eventually drawing 2-2].

“Cagliari are a well-organised team, they have a good Coach [Diego Lopez] and it’s a passionate stadium.

“We need to prepare ourselves to play differently to how we have been in the last few games, where we haven’t been good enough.

“I want to see answers tomorrow, I don’t want to trust what I see in training. It’s different in the match, you need to show different things.

“Tackles and everything else are done differently between training and a game. What I want to see above all is a change from recent games.

“When I talk to the team they seem focused, but on a Sunday they sometimes don’t concentrate for the 90 minutes. Sometimes we struggle to do things that seem simple.

“We need a result to start again. I thought we could do it against Fiorentina, but then we lost.

“Tomorrow I want to see a tough team that will play in a certain way. We need actions, not words.”
