The first leg of the quarter-final is in Turin on Tuesday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

It’ll be their first meeting since the Merengues ran out 4-1 winners in last year’s Final in Cardiff.

“This is a clash we certainly care about, but we know there are countless difficulties, that we are playing against a team that is stronger than us – history says so – and who have extraordinary individuals,” Buffon told RMC Sport.

“However, we also realise that over two legs, the most talented side doesn’t always win. If we manage to do better than them over the two games, then we’ll achieve something amazing.

“When you play against a team like Real Madrid, taking one player away won’t make a huge amount of difference. Having said that, knowing I’ll face Cristiano Ronaldo will give me a few sleepless nights.”

Real Madrid rested several top players for Saturday’s 3-0 Liga victory away to Las Palmas, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Toni Kroos, while Dani Carvajal was suspended.

Gareth Bale bagged a brace around Karim Benzema’s penalty.
