Roberto De Zerbi concedes Benevento are “demoralised” after a 6-2 defeat to Lazio, which they had been leading 2-1 down to 10 men.

Le Streghe seemed destined to cause a huge upset when goalkeeper Christian Puggioni was sent off just seven minutes in for handling outside the penalty area.

Despite the Ciro Immobile opener, Danilo Cataldi and Guilherme still managed to turn it around and lead after 52 minutes at the Olimpico.

Despite the Ciro Immobile opener, Danilo Cataldi and Guilherme still managed to turn it around and lead after 52 minutes at the Olimpico.

“It was an odd game, as it’s not easy being down to 10 men for practically the entire match against a side like Lazio,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were still right in it until Lazio’s fourth goal. My only complaint was the final 15 minutes, when we just stopped playing. The result left them demoralised and that’s not right, as we should always be able to leave the field with heads held high.”

Benevento need a miracle to avoid relegation straight back into Serie B, as they have only 10 points from 29 rounds.

“When the finish line is so far away, the team does lose confidence at the first hurdle. We tried so hard all season, but kept letting go at the crunch moment.

“There are another nine games to play and we’ll try to honour them to the end.”
