The first leg of the Champions League quarter-final ended 4-1 at Camp Nou with two own goals and a Maxime Gonalons assist to Luis Suarez.

“The result does not reflect what we saw on the pitch and it is far too harsh on us,” Monchi told reporters.

“Before the game we said it was important to stop Lionel Messi and we did that. We lacked a bit of luck and ruthlessness in front of goal, plus there was the referee, who I am sure made mistakes.

“There were two penalties that everyone saw and they did influence the game.”

It was a particularly impressive showing considering Radja Nainggolan and Cengiz Under were out injured.

“When you reach the Champions League quarter-finals, it’s important to have all the players in good shape. It’s true that Nainggolan and Under have been very important for us over the last two months, but I don’t think we should dwell on what could’ve been. We have to focus on what we did well and build on that in Rome on Tuesday.

“We beat Chelsea 3-0 this season, so we must take that attitude and try to go forward.”
