La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed today that the former Inter and Manchester City tactician is the favourite to take over the Nazionale, preferred to Gigi Di Biagio, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte.

Mancini’s future at Zenit is in serious doubt after a disappointing campaign and today they lost 2-1 at home to Krasnodar.

“We were good in the first half, but wasted four chances and should’ve been 3-0 up at the break,” said Mancio in today’s tense Press conference.

“We’re missing Kokorin and unfortunately now have strikers who don’t score goals. We create chances and don’t finish them. Sebastian Driussi and Emiliano Rigoni have to work really, really hard, because their level is still too low at the moment.

“I am very, very let down by Rigoni. Slightly less by Driussi, as he’s only 20 and can become a great striker, but Rigoni zero goals in the league is not acceptable. It is not acceptable that after Aleksandr Kokorin’s injury our strikers scored only five goals.

“Maybe it’s my fault, as I teach them so badly that they make mistakes… If you don’t score goals, you don’t win games. The only one who scored goals for us was Kokorin. He’s injured, now we don’t have many other options or much quality in the squad, so we have to make do.

“We are disappointed for the fans and feel badly about this, but there doesn’t need to be any meeting with them. I always fight to the end, but we had four chances in that first half that a child would score. A child. We’ve had this problem since August 15, the forwards don’t hold the ball up and the only one who put it in the net was Kokorin.”

Mancini was asked about the Italy reports and if he was trying to get fired so that he’d be paid the termination fee.

“My friend, I don’t need this money. If I decide to leave, then I’ll leave. I don’t want money from Zenit. I am trying to do my work with people who listen to me, not who do whatever they want and just buy players left, right and centre wherever they feel like it.”
