“We have to forget about the Champions League and Liverpool until this game has ended, because it’s too important for us to finish in the top four. Victory is fundamental and we need our minds on the job here,” the director of sport told Mediaset Premium.

“We are in the semi-final thanks to the decisions and work of Eusebio Di Francesco. I said that after the comeback against Barcelona and I confirm it now. It’s not easy to be in a semi-final and take on Liverpool.

“The 5-2 result at Anfield is difficult to analyse, but we have to look forward now. We know what we need to do and will put that on the field.

“The final 10 minutes of that match prove we can hurt Liverpool. If it had ended 5-0, we would’ve been dead and buried, but there’s life in us yet and we must take that fact to achieve another miracle. There is belief.”

Monchi was asked about reports over the last couple of days suggesting Milan wanted to hire him as a replacement for Massimiliano Mirabelli.

“I don’t know why that was published, there’s no truth to it. My mind is on Roma, there’s nothing else. I had to read that story a couple of times, as I couldn’t understand why they were talking about me!”

This evening, Monchi’s former club Sevilla officially fired Coach Vincenzo Montella.

“I am sorry for both, as it’s a difficult time. I expect the club to find the right path for these remaining four matches and wish Montella the best too.”
