This means for the first time in his career, Ballardini will begin a season at Marassi.

He has taken over mid-term on three different occasions, each time steering them to mid-table comfort, but was never confirmed in the role.

His first stint was from November 2010 to June 2011, then he was called back again in January 2013 to conclude the season.

Ballardini was brought in to replace Ivan Juric on November 6 2017 with the side risking relegation, but oversaw 11 wins, five draws and nine defeats.
