Former Inter owner Massimo Moratti has revealed his biggest regret in the transfer market – not signing Eric Cantona.

Moratti’s Inter reign was characterised by big spending throughout the 1990s and 2000s, with the likes of Ronaldo, Christian Vieri and Zlatan Ibrahimovic brought in, but the 72-year-old confessed there was one star who got away.

“The player I regret missing out on the most? Cantona but also [Roberto] Mancini,” he said at a club event.

“My mistake? Not caring enough about [Inter’s] defence. [Walter] Samuel, in this sense, had been a crucial purchase.

“My most beautiful victory? The Champions League Final in Madrid in 2010. It was wonderful.

“My worst defeat? Against Lazio on May 5, 2002. It was rather disappointing. Communication? It's very important, more so than in my day.

“Football is always changing. My father? I’ll never make comparisons with him.

“I‘ve always considered him a phenomenon and I learned so much from him.”
