Torino captain Andrea Belotti led the tributes for the victims of the Superga disaster at today’s ceremony.

The ‘Grande Torino’ squad was killed in a plane crash in the hills above Turin on this day in 1949, and every year fans and players go up to the monument at the Basilica di Superga to pay their respects.

Today the whole squad, Coach Walter Mazzarri and President Urbano Cairo joined the supporters at the site of the crash to remember that fallen team.

Belotti read out the names of the 31 people killed in the crash, before a long applause from the fans and players.

Just before the commemoration, Daniele Baselli paid tribute to il Grande Torino on Twitter.

“Perhaps this team was too marvellous to grow old,” Baselli wrote.

“Perhaps destiny wanted to stop them at the height of their beauty.”
