“It was a nasty way to go out, as we couldn’t have done any more in the second leg,” the director of sport told Mediaset Premium after the 7-6 Champions League aggregate semi-final loss.

“We have to forget about Liverpool and get our heads on Serie A, as we are within four points of securing a Champions League place for next season.

“It’ll be complicated today because Cagliari don’t deserve to be near the bottom, they haven’t had much luck so far. It’s life or death for both sides. If we win today, it’ll be a very big step forward.

“Players who want to take part in Champions League semi-finals must be prepared also to put them aside and focus on the next game straight away. It’s easy to say, not easy to do. The work is done in training on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to aid the mentality of the players.”

Monchi was asked about reports that Florenzi’s contract negotiations are not going well.

“We can’t say there is an economic problem, because we haven’t talked about it in definitive terms yet. We’ve decided to wait until the end of the season and then we’ll talk.

“The figures that I read in the papers are not true. Alessandro is an important player for our future. He was born here, grew up in our youth academy and has an important role in the squad.

“Florenzi can play several different roles, it is up to the Coach to decide. I know he likes to be further forward, but in my view he’s had an excellent campaign at right-back.

“None of players have ever been on the market. We listen if there are offers and then decide. Dzeko has another two years on his contract and we are happy to have him here. Edin is a fundamental player.”
