Le Streghe were relegated weeks ago, but bowed out at the Stadio Vigorito with a victory thanks to the late Cheick Diabate strike.

At the final whistle, the crowd applauded and chanted to thank the players for their efforts in this first ever top flight campaign.

“We experienced a fantastic day and to receive such shows of affection and respect despite relegation really gave us goosebumps,” De Zerbi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We wanted to give a small, dignified moment of satisfaction to our fans in the final home game.”

The tactician has refused to comment on his future and whether he’ll remain at Benevento in Serie B next season.

“Talking about myself today isn’t right. We’ll talk about it next week. I don’t want to take anything away from the players, the club and the fans. We should talk about them and not me.

“This is a team with great quality, but also human qualities and without those, you don’t get certain results. I think Enrico Brignola is under-rated, because he made the difference in many games and it’s important for him to maintain this hunger next year.”
