The Orobici are still in with a chance of sixth place if they beat Cagliari and Milan falter with Fiorentina, but look to be heading back into the Europa League via the preliminary rounds in July.

“There’s still this final round to go, but we do have a much better chance than we did this morning,” Gasp told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

He was in the stands due to a ban and was seen grinning at the giant flag depicting him in the Curva before kick-off.

“The affection shown to be is indelible, but now we need to repay that by getting into Europe. A win today would’ve made it easier to get sixth, but even seventh would be a good reward for this incredible campaign.”

Gasperini was sent off for dissent last week and sensationally claimed he was “threatened” by referee Luca Pairetto.

He also said the referee knew that he’d be assigned to the next Atalanta game against Lazio.

“I am absolutely ready for an investigation. I’d welcome it. I said nothing that could not be confirmed. It’s their problem if the referee knew he was supposed to be assigned to the game in Rome.

“We have never complained about the referees, if he knew where he was going to be the next weekend, that’s their problem, not mine.

“There is technology, the radios, I’m sure it’ll be somewhere. I said nothing untrue.”
