The Viola’s defeat at home to Cagliari last week means they have practically no chance of getting into the Europa League.

“It’s a positive season, because we did realistically better than was expected of us at the start,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We wanted to start building a team with a solid core and I think we laid the foundations for something important here, as we were in the running for Europe until the last two rounds.

“We’ve done good work and are convinced there is more to be done, areas where we can improve. I don’t know how many people thought at the start of the season we could finish eighth or ninth.

“This week, we started discussing the future and planning for next term. I gave some precise indications on what we need and what we were lacking this season. We must try to find the right players in the right positions and people with character as well as technique.”

Milan Badelj will be out of contract next month and has been linked with Milan, but is still considering his situation.

“The club has made an offer and the player will decide next week. If he were to stay with us, we’d be very happy, both for what he brings on the pitch and in the locker room.

“The directors tell me we have no need to sell, even though I know how the transfer market works. I’d like to carry on the work we are doing and focus on those players who can continue to grow.

“The objective next season is to improve our position and get into Europe. I am ambitious. If the club give me a strong squad, I want to prove that I can lead it.

“The important thing will be that we’ll start on July 4 with a good 70-80 per cent of the squad already in place, which wasn’t the situation last term.”
